What to Wear for Mehndi, Sangeet & Wedding Day : A Complete Guide
South Asian weddings are rarely a single-day affair — between Mehndi, Sangeet, and the wedding/reception itself, guests and brides alike need more than one outfit. Here's a simple guide to dressing for each event.
Mehndi
Mehndi is the most colorful, relaxed event of the wedding season. Bright yellows, greens, oranges, and pinks are traditional, and comfort matters since the event often includes dancing and sitting on the floor for henna application. A gharara, sharara, or a simple embroidered lawn/chiffon 3-piece suit are all great choices. Keep jewelry light and floral-inspired if you can.
Sangeet
Sangeet is the music-and-dance night, so outfits usually lean a little more glamorous than Mehndi but still need to allow easy movement. A flared lehenga, an embellished 3-piece suit, or a gharara with a fitted kurti all work well. Richer jewel tones — maroon, emerald, royal blue — are popular for this event.
Wedding Day / Reception
This is where the most formal, heavily embellished pieces come out — bridal lehengas, pishwas, and richly embroidered gowns for the bride, and equally elegant (if slightly less elaborate) versions for close family and guests. Deep reds, maroons, gold, and jewel tones remain the most traditional choices, though pastel and contemporary colors have become increasingly popular in recent years.
Men's Wedding Season Dressing
For grooms and male guests, a sherwani with a coordinating shawl or turban is the standard for the wedding day, while a simpler kurta pajama works well for Mehndi and casual pre-wedding events.
